This Week in Foul Balls (April 8-14): Eric Byrnes of MLB Network Endangers Son, Votto Up to No Good Again, and More

For the week of April 8-14

The 2018 MLB baseball season rolls on, and with it the foul ball fun keeps on going and going an going. Welcome back to this week’s version of “TWIFB Notes” (‘This Week in Foul Balls’). In this weekly post, I look at the best and worst foul ball moments in Major League Baseball…and sometimes Minor League Baseball…and sometimes softball and high school baseball.

First, my running total of foul ball hits in the facial area, or what I call “Foul Ball Facials”, as they are reported ONLY on Twitter. This is the count after 22 weeks of play:

#MLB #FoulBallFacials re: Twitter 2018 RUNNING TOTALS:

Day 4/14:  46 total

  • 7 Just flat out hit
  • 12 Using phone/not watching
  • 1 PARENTAL NEGLECT! (1 gave own son bloody nose!)
  • 3 Ricochet
  • 21 going for ball!
  • 2 Other (food/alcohol)
  • 4 net fails

A mere 15.2% just hit outright.

Compare to 2017 season stats:

126 total

  • 61 Using phone
  • 17 due to PARENTAL NEGLIGENCE!
  • 8 DRUNK
  • 32 going for ball

93.6% Self-inflicted injuries

The Great or Very Good

It’s unfortunate there hasn’t been many great or very good foul ball snags. I blame netting. Fewer players can leap into the seats because of the netting; fewer balls into the seats means not as many opportunities for fans to catch balls in their beer cups, popcorn buckets or nachos. But at least Neil Walker didn’t let us down when he nearly flipped over the railing and into the Yankees dugout while catching a foul ball to end the 6th inning:

The Horrible

Oh Joey Votto. Oh Joey. Votto is up to his old tricks. He’s a bit of a douchebag.

This guy needs to be reported to child services. Why do so many parents think this type of stupid behavior is acceptable and should be applauded?

Speaking of dads endangering their kids going after foul balls instead of shielding their children, check out this moron’s actions which led ot his sin falling off his lap…and what’s worse is he’s connected to MLB Network! If anyone should know the dangers…right?

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Ouch. This ump at the Toronto Blue Jays vs Baltimore Orioles game on April 10, 2018. Just ouch.
