Ball Licking, Ueberroth, Blue (Jay) Balls & Joe West is HeMan: Foul Ball Plays from June 22-28

Our new weekly installment of baseball fun centers on the greatest plays outside the lines. Each week, we bring you the top player and fan plays relating to foul balls and anything that happens outside the lines. For the week of June 22 – 28, let’s see who’s Got Balls?

1)     This guy so had it; the foul ball was right to him. Then it popped out of his hands. And he makes a great recovery.

2)     This Phillies fan(actic) snagged a foul ball last week. Watch as one slight misstep could have spelled disaster.

3)     Jose Lobaton had an interesting way of stopping a foul ball. He did it with his mask, but not in the traditional manner. Check out what happens to this Carlos Gomez foul ball:

Carlos seems to get in our lists on a regular basis, doesn’t he?

4)     We are always cautioning fans about the dangers of foul balls. And we’ve seen a great many fans doing really mean, bad, and dumb things. This one falls under “absolutely uncoordinated.” But at least this Arizona Diamondbacks fan was dressed for the occasion.

5)     Well now. What an interesting week this turned out to be. We all know—or SHOULD know!—that the great Ted Williams started the trend of smelling the bat after a foul ball, and so many players do it now. We’ve even heard rumors of MLB players licking their bats. But we’ve never seen anyone lick the ball. Until last week, when two youngsters decided they wanted to know. Kids do the darnedest things.

This young Astros fan did it first…then, for some inexplicable reason, got smacked by his sister.

Later in the week, this young lady did it at the Dbacks –Padres game.

It appears this was all food related. Two licks and, if you read our PWIB Notes for last week, a tray of brisket connects these events together.

6)     Sign up this Nationals fan who laid out over the dugout to snag a foul ball. It’s cool; just watch:

7)     This young Blue Jays fan is a true gentleman. His parents raised him well. The young man catches a foul ball, then turns around and gives it to a young lady behind him. This time there was no ball swap out.

8)     Commissioner Ueberroth caught himself a foul ball! He actually looks a bit confused, not sure what to do, as those around him have a great laugh about it. Nice snag Commish!

9)     No one, and we mean NO ONE is ever safe from the force of a foul ball. Not even a batter. Sure, we see fouls off the foot, the shin, and lower extremities, but sometimes we are reminded of the fluky-ness of baseball, as Rollins was reminded in this clip:

10) Here’s another example of how scary foul balls are. The Blue Jays ducked this one. Thankfully, no one was hurt!

11)MLB umpire Joe West is kind of a HeMan. After getting hit by a foul ball, check out what the tough guy does. Pain? HA! Someone’s been pumping up:

12)We see it every once in a while, but it’s still fun to watch: Fan catches foul ball. Then high-fives everyone in their vicinity.

13)Pretty sure this fella didn’t actually need to do a belly flop to get the ball. Guessing he wanted to make a spectical of himself in order to get on TV. You tell me:

14)Cut4 so has the top plays so far WAY off. They clearly haven’t seen as many of the snags as we have. How many of these do you think are actually impressive? More impressive than the 4 dads this season who’ve caught balls while holding a kid? You decide.

15)This is going to be in next week as well as yet another cautionary tale regarding the dangers of foul balls. On Sunday one foul ball took out TWO fans.

Reminder: PLEASE pay attention at games! If you’re a parent, pay special attention. As parents we all know it’s hard to split attention, but at least bring a glove and be wary of where you sit. You can use our app to help you locate the WORST places for foul balls too, thus helping to protect your young. As much as we LOVE foul balls, they are dangerous. They are considered an inherent part of the game, so you are responsible for paying attention. Be careful!
