And the foul ball fun keeps on going and going and going. Welcome back to this week’s version of “TWIFB Notes” (This Week in Foul Balls). In this weekly post, I look at the best and worst foul ball moments in Major League Baseball…and sometimes Minor League Baseball…and sometimes softball and high school baseball.
First, our running total of foul ball hits in the facial area, or what I call “Foul Ball Facials”, as they are reported ONLY on Twitter. This is the count after three weeks of play:
Foul Ball Facials re: Twitter
- 101 #MLB fans hit in head area in 129 days (Aug. 13)
- 43 admit being distracted by phone (%)
- 6 too drunk to move
- 1 Hit TWICE!
- 23 injured going for a foul ball
If your keeping score, that means roughly 75% of ALL foul ball hits to the head area were a direct result of the fan doing something to injure themselves.
The Hall of Fame/Fun
The Rally Cat! Did you see the kitty who spurred a rally for the St. Louis Cardinals during the I-70 showdown with the Kansas City Royals? Words won’t suffice. Check it out:
As parents, we develop quicker than average, almost super human reflexes. This mom is a perfect example of this. Good reaction Mom! Mom prevents foul ball gaffe A Cincinnati Reds fan stops her daughter from throwing back a foul ball.
Not sure where this belongs because it’s both awesome and shameful, depending on your perspective, but watch what happens at the Colorado Rockies – Cleveland Indians game when Kipnis snags foul ball, and proceeds to double up Blackmon:
The Kansas City Royals – St. Louis Cardinals I-70 Series got some good play last week. The series has two in the “Hall of Fame/Fun.” Check out Eric Hosmer accidentally hitting the ball twice on one swing. It seems only he and the 1B ump realized what happened.
The Hall of Shame/Lame
Well, this is new. Watch as a minor-leaguer gets hit in the head by his own foul ball. Thing is, it wasn’t a straight up foul, but off to the 3B side….and it, well….watch:
Former South Carolina pitcher Jordan Montgomery OK after taking foul ball to head during Yankees BP: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/yankees-montgomery-struck-in-head-by-foul-ball-while-signing-autographs/ar-AApVBpA
I’m putting this here because I’m not sure if Myers gave the kid the ball after snagging it cleanly right next to him. Regardless, check out the young Los Angeles Dodgers fan who has one of the best reactions when he realizes it was Wil Myers who “stole” his foul ball.
This is just cute. Check out this article, “Aaron Judge has a mini-me and he made an impressive catch in the stands”.
